Miedecke said Donald became aware of the alleged financial fraud when Karen’s friends reported her financial activities to police and Adult Protective Services. And although Donald and the rest of the family cut off access to Karen’s financial accounts, Miedecke said her friend “still found ways to get money” and continued contacting the identity theft.
“She started hiding everything,” Miedecke said. “But I kept sending messages day and night, and it just kept going.”
According to Miedecke, the day before Karen died, she asked friends for money, claiming that Selleck’s manager’s wife had passed away and that she needed financial support.
“That was the last straw for Donald,” she said in an interview published May 22. “He was so embarrassed. He couldn’t believe she would ask her friends to take part in this scam.”
Miedecke added that she wanted to share Karen and Donald’s story to raise awareness and prevent others from finding themselves in a similar situation.
Miedecke added, “Think about the impact if you don’t have the ability to make any more money in your lifetime and someone steals all your money, what that would cause.”
