The latest trending dessert has just arrived.
That’s exactly what the name “dot cake” is. Visit TikTok and you’ll find countless videos of influencers scraping spoons across the sprinkled surface before diving into a cup of fluffy cake.
“I can’t use my phone without watching a Dot Cakes video,” baker Alex Posner, who co-founded The Dot Cakes, a sweet bakery on New York’s Long Island, with his mother, Sondra Posner, recently told Good Morning America. “It’s very realistic.”
After all, Alex never expected the treats to become so popular when he started making them as a high school senior in 2017.
“This was just a friend of a friend story,” she explained on the 2024 Invisible Inc. podcast. “People loved the flavor, and it was cute. It was just like this packaged deal.”
But it wasn’t until her sophomore year that Alex’s customer base expanded that she realized she could turn the idea into a business.
“I had customers coming to my house, coming into my store, and I had no idea who they were,” the University of Texas at Austin graduate continued. “I thought, ‘This is reaching people I didn’t even know existed, and I didn’t even know it was possible.'”
