Martin Short makes first public appearance since death of daughter Katherine Short
Martin Short has overcome many heartbreaks in his life.
He lost his older brother and parents before he was 20, lost his wife of 30 years, Nancy Dolman, to ovarian cancer in 2010, and in February, his and Nancy’s oldest child, Katherine Short, died by suicide at age 42.
“It was a nightmare for the family,” he told CBS Sunday Morning’s Tracy Smith about Katherine’s death in an interview shared on May 10. “But, like my wife, I understand that mental health and cancer are both illnesses, and sometimes terminal symptoms that accompany the illness.”
This is the first time Martin has spoken out about his daughter’s death, outside of the statement released by Martin’s representatives at the time of Katherine’s death, and in our conversation, Martin offered further insight into her invisible struggle.
“My daughter has been battling extreme mental health for a long time,” the 76-year-old said. “With borderline personality disorder and all that, she did her best until she couldn’t anymore.”
He recalled: “My nan’s last words to me were: “Martin, let me go.”” He also added about his daughter. “And she just said, ‘Dad, let me go,'” he added.
