Tubi, the Fox-owned streaming service, on Tuesday announced the release of a native app within ChatGPT. This makes it easy for viewers to discover a large library of over 300,000 movies and TV episodes.
While competitors like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are experimenting with AI-powered recommendations within their platforms, Tubi is the first major streaming service to build a dedicated experience directly within ChatGPT.
To access the integration, users install the Tubi app from the ChatGPT app store and start by typing “@Tubi” at the prompt. From there, users can make natural language requests like “thriller for girls’ night out” or “something fun” and instantly receive personalized recommendations, all linked to titles available on Tubi.
The announcement comes amid increasing competition across the streaming industry. With endless entertainment options, discovery is a challenge for all platforms competing for limited audience attention. Many streamers are starting to incorporate features inspired by social media platforms to keep users engaged, reflecting broader changes in how viewers consume content.
Tubi’s movements are based on previous experiments with AI. In 2023, the company introduced “Rabbit AI,” a feature within its mobile app powered by ChatGPT. This allows users to ask specific questions and receive personalized recommendations. However, this tool was discontinued the following year.
The new ChatGPT integration signals a strategic shift. Rather than trying to recreate the AI experience in-house, Tubi now meets users where they are already looking for answers. ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users in February. Tubi reports more than 100 million monthly active users.
In other news, Tubi recently launched the Creatorverse Incubator, a new initiative aimed at supporting emerging content creators. The program provides promotional support and potential funding opportunities for original programming that debuts exclusively on the platform.
OpenAI first introduced a way for developers to build apps within ChatGPT in October. Dozens of companies have started integrating now, including Booking.com, Canva, DoorDash, Expedia, Spotify, Figma, and Zillow. SeatGeek is the most recent company to release a native app.
