As social distancing became the norm during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cameron felt a growing rift with former NHL right winger Val, whom he married in 1996.
“It was going south very quickly,” the mother of Natasha, Lev and Maksim said in a July 2025 episode of her eponymous podcast. “And I thought, ‘I don’t know. I don’t know if I’m going to make it.'”
But an unexpected Bible study turned out to be the answer to their prayers. “Lev came to us and said, ‘I want to talk to you guys,'” Candace said of her second birth. “Lev preached to us like a 45-minute sermon about marriage. It was like he was sitting on the couch with his Bible open and just talking to us about it.”
She believes he was able to restore their bond by reminding her that “they got it.” “He had a very soft voice and there was so much wisdom behind it,” the Fuller House star explained. “And he looked us straight in the eye and asked me individually and asked Val as well, ‘Did we do everything we could?’ We walked away from there, and Val and I were like, ‘We raised very good kids.’ ”
Calling it a “pivotal moment” in their marriage, she continued, “It really changed for us after that conversation. It’s a completely different scenario when your kids sit you down and talk to you and say, ‘Are you being as adult as you can be?'”
