“I sat down with the showrunners before the writers’ room for the season started and said, ‘This is 100 pages,'” Dave told E! “Normally you don’t want to show anything before it’s completely finished, but it’s like, ‘Here’s 100 pages and this is exactly where it’s going. Here’s how the rest of it works.'”
“I knew I already had a complete draft, but I wasn’t ready to share everything,” she continued. “And most of those moves were book moves. There were some small adjustments, but that’s pretty much where we were going. So they knew the book question, and the question for the second season, was, ‘What are you going to do to be forgiven? How do you get that second chance that we all crave?’ ”
But that’s not to say that the recently debuted second season (which includes Judy Greer in the cast) is an exact replica of her book.
“It’s really beautiful how they fit together,” Dave said. “They don’t answer these questions in exactly the same way, but I think it’s fun for readers and viewers to see how they discuss them.”
For example, that means, “You never see Owen get killed in the show or in the book,” she quipped of Coster-Waldau’s character, “because I don’t really know why we’re telling this story. Because for me, that’s kind of how I approach thriller writing in general, I’m not interested in revenge or retribution.”
