England defeated Pakistan by two wickets in the Super Eights match to become the first team to reach the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, with seven other teams competing for the remaining three spots.
Pakistan’s loss to the two-time champions at Palekele on Tuesday left their fortunes in the tournament hanging in the balance, but this is familiar territory for the team that last reached the last four at the 2022 world men’s event.

All seven of the remaining Super 8 teams still have a chance to advance to the finals, but some are in a better position than others.
Here’s what your team needs to do to win.
How can India reach the T20 World Cup semi-finals?
The defending champions suffered a 76-goal loss to South Africa in their first Super Eight match on Sunday, leaving them in a must-win situation with their remaining two games remaining.
With this loss, India’s net run rate has also declined and it currently stands at -3.80, keeping them in third place in Group 1 of the Super Eights stage.
If India loses one of the remaining two games, it is likely that India will be eliminated.
However, all is not lost for the co-hosts as two wins from their remaining two games would give them four points, and if the other Group 1 results go well, they would qualify.
If India wins both matches and South Africa also wins, both teams will advance to the semi-finals. South Africa lead the group with six points, while India are second with four points. In such a scenario, West Indies would finish with just two points and Zimbabwe with zero points.
If other results do not favor India, they could find themselves in a three-way battle over net run rate and that could be where things go wrong for Suryakumar Yadav’s side.
If India win both matches but South Africa loses one match to Zimbabwe or West Indies, the Proteas will be level on points with India and probably have a better net run rate.
If South Africa lose to West Indies, the Maroons, who currently have the highest net run rate of all four teams in the group (5.35), will take four points.
The ensuing battle for net run rate may not be favorable for India, who need to win by big margins against both Zimbabwe and West Indies.

How can West Indies reach the semi-finals?
The Maroons are in top form and, along with South Africa, are the only team to have won all five of their previous matches.
The 107-run defeat against Zimbabwe has propelled them to the top of the table and if they remain unbeaten they will reach the semi-finals.
Even if West Indies beat India but lose to South Africa, they would still be in a good position to advance based on their net run rate.
If they lose two of their two games in the Super Eight, they will finish with two points. Even if Zimbabwe beats India, all is not lost and a net run rate battle begins between India, West Indies and Zimbabwe.
How can South Africa advance to the semi-finals?
The Proteas have a higher net run rate than India and Zimbabwe, so they only need one win in their remaining two games to advance.
If they lose to both West Indies and Zimbabwe, South Africa will have to battle India and Zimbabwe for net run rate and could still emerge as favorites to qualify.
Will Zimbabwe make it to the semi-finals?
All is not lost for the Chevrons, who need to beat India and South Africa by reasonable margins to qualify based on net run rate.

How can Pakistan reach the T20 World Cup semi-finals?
After a disastrous defeat against New Zealand and a defeat against England, Pakistan find themselves in a familiar scenario of relying on other results to have a chance of progressing.
Salman Ali Agha’s side need to beat Sri Lanka in their final Super Eights match on Saturday to have any chance of survival in the World Cup.
Still, New Zealand still needs to pick up two losses in two games, against Sri Lanka on Wednesday and England on Friday. Pakistan could then surpass Sri Lanka in net run rate and join England in the semi-finals.
If New Zealand defeats Sri Lanka, the co-hosts will exit the tournament regardless of the result of the match against Pakistan.
In that case, Pakistan would require England to beat New Zealand by a large margin to surpass the Kiwis in net run rate.
How can New Zealand reach the semi-finals?
If Mitchell Santner’s team defeats Sri Lanka, they will pick up three points from two games and move into second place. But all that could change if Pakistan win against Sri Lanka after a crushing defeat against England.
Pakistan and New Zealand will then compete to join England on a net run rate basis.
How can Sri Lanka reach the semi-finals?
The host nation must win the next two matches to qualify. One loss and one win is not enough to win.
