When she became pregnant for the first time, Mindy said she felt she could raise Kit on her own, just as her mother and father had done for her. She writes that she thought, “If my mother can do everything without a whisper of complaint, why can’t I?”
But the Office graduate realized she didn’t have a mother nearby to advise her on breastfeeding and other seemingly easy tasks that later proved difficult. So, on the advice of a friend, she hired an infant nurse, which turned out to be one of the best decisions she ever made.
“I didn’t have a mother, but I did have Rose. She loved to give advice, and I loved to listen to advice,” Mindy recalled, listing the fears Rose helped her overcome. “All these fears were the worst I’ve ever experienced in my life, and Rose helped me keep them at bay. She was my mother when I needed a mother, and it wasn’t even her job.”
Mindy cared so much about Rose that when the baby nurse asked her if she would ever need her help again, she replied, “I said I don’t know if I’ll have another baby, but if it means Rose will come and live with me, I think I’ll just have it.”
