Jack Hughes smiles after losing a tooth and winning a hockey game

Team USA hockey players hold emotional celebration with Johnny Gaudreau’s children after 2026 Olympics

Jack Hughes made history at the 2026 Olympics, but he didn’t need teeth to do it.

The U.S. hockey player who scored the winning goal against Canada said what went through his head the moment he had his tooth broken during a game on February 22nd.

“My first thought was, ‘I’m going to call a penalty,'” Jack said at the U.S. men’s hockey gold medal press conference. “Actually, the first thing I thought was I looked on the ice and saw my teeth.”

“I was like, ‘Here we go again,'” he recalled. “Because I know what happened last time wasn’t very pleasant.”

But losing teeth is just the name of the game. So New Jersey Devils players weren’t too upset after Canadian forward Sam Bennett knocked down at least three jacks with a high stick to his mouth.

“It definitely sounds crazy to you guys because it’s just a different profession, but in hockey, if you lose a tooth, it doesn’t even matter if you come back and play,” he said in an interview with NBC Chicago. “It’s like automatic.”

But eventually frustration set in.
