Daryl Hannah shows up at John’s Loft after his first date with Carolyn
John’s girlfriend, Daryl Hannah (Dree Hemingway), was raving to his cousin and best friend Anthony Radziwill (Erich Bergen) that he just wanted to call Carolyn, and when he got home, he found her in the loft.
Soon, he ends up taking Daryl to his cousin Edward Kennedy Jr.’s wedding in October 1993, much to the disapproval of his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy. Carolyn learns from the cover of a tabloid that her seemingly eager suitor is back together with a former movie star.
Meanwhile, John continues to send Carolyn flowers, and when they run into each other at another event, he learns that she hates him and tells her that he can’t seem to work. To which she replies, “I don’t know you well enough to hate you.”
The surprise rendezvous was a dramatic way for Love Story to introduce the Splash star, but producers didn’t consult Darryl, who married Neil Young in 2018.
“We really want to discover these characters from the inside out,” producer Nina Jacobson told Gold Derby. “And when you go and meet a real person, it’s hard to respond to a lot of agendas. So we tend not to do that, except in rare cases.”
In Darryl’s case, she’s “an antagonist to what we want narratively in the story,” Jacobson explained, “but we still try to honor the fact that she’s fluently integrated into this[celebrity]world, which Carolyn doesn’t have.”
