—

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash that injured British former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and killed two of his close friends has been charged with four offences, Nigerian police said on Friday.

The Ogun State Police Command said in a statement that Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, appeared before the Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday in connection with an accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

According to the newspaper, Kayode was charged with four charges, including causing death by dangerous driving. The case was adjourned to January 20th.

Reuters could not immediately contact Kayode or his legal representative. Kayode has not publicly commented on the incident.

Joshua, 36, suffered minor injuries Monday when the Lexus SUV he was riding in collided with another vehicle. Two of his friends and team members, Sheena Gami and Latif Ayodele, died in the accident.

The FRSC said preliminary findings suggest the car was speeding and attempted an illegal overtaking before colliding with the stationary truck.

Joshua, who was born in the UK to Nigerian parents, was taken to hospital for tests but is in stable condition, promoter Matchroom Boxing said in a statement.

President Bola Tinubu called the incident a “tragic accident” and expressed his condolences to Joshua and the victims’ families.

The incident occurred just over a week after Joshua knocked out American social media star Jake Paul in the sixth round of a bout in Miami. Joshua is expected to face fellow Briton Tyson Fury later this year.
