The family relationship between Janelle Brown and ex Kody Brown is rather a complicated web.
Not only were the Sister Wives stars spiritually married for nearly 30 years before breaking up in 2022, but Janelle’s mother, Cheryl Usher, actually married Kody’s father, Wynne Braun, in October 1992, just three months before their wedding in January 1993.
Janelle said the complicated story began when she first met Kody and became “intrigued” by the idea of polygamy after meeting his polygamous family.
“My mother came to save me from a polygamist. Her daughter wasn’t going to marry into a crazy cult,” Janelle, who lost her father, Robert Schriever, when she was young, explained on the Nov. 30 episode of the TLC series. “And she ended up marrying Kody’s father.”
And that led to some awkward conversations with Janelle’s other relatives.
“It was a little weird at first, but I was like, ‘Okay, great. Someone came with me,'” she continued. “Because a lot of my family didn’t understand my choice. They just thought I had hit rock bottom and were hesitant to keep in touch with me.”
