OpenAI on Wednesday announced ChatGPT for Teachers, a version of its artificial intelligence chatbot designed for K-12 educators and school districts.
According to OpenAI, educators can use ChatGPT for Teachers to securely work with student information, receive personalized instructional support, and collaborate with colleagues across the district. There are also administrative controls available to district leaders to determine how ChatGPT for Teachers works within their community.
OpenAI said it will initially launch ChatGPT for Teachers with school districts representing approximately 150,000 educators. ChatGPT for Teachers will be available for free to K-12 educators in the U.S. through June 2027, the company said.
“Our goal here is to make sure that we provide not only access to AI tools for teachers, but a teacher-centered experience so that teachers can truly guide their use of AI,” Leah Belsky, vice president of education at OpenAI, told reporters at a briefing.
The company said student data will be protected and nothing shared within ChatGPT for Teachers will be used to train models.
OpenAI burst into the mainstream in 2022 with the release of the general-purpose chatbot “ChatGPT.” It has faced criticism from teachers and parents who say students can use the tool to cheat or avoid critical thinking.
Although ChatGPT for Teachers is not aimed at students, OpenAI said that by giving teachers hands-on experience with AI tools, it can help teachers understand and establish best practices in the classroom.
“All students today are growing up with AI, and teachers play a central role in helping students learn how to use these tools responsibly and effectively,” the company said in a blog post. “To support that effort, we need space for educators to explore AI on their own.”
In July, OpenAI released a product within ChatGPT called “Study Mode.” The learning mode is built with college students in mind and aims to help them solve problems step by step before arriving at the answer.
OpenAI said it built Learning Mode as “the first step in a long journey to improve learning on ChatGPT.”
