But the public’s desire to get involved has influenced the Cambridge Dictionary’s word of the year. The world’s most popular English dictionary honored “parasocial” as its word of the year, noting that part of its popularity stems from the famous couple’s engagement.
“Searching for parasocial skyrocketed as Taylor Swift’s announcement of her engagement to Travis Kelsey received worldwide coverage and media analyzed fan reaction,” the dictionary wrote in its word of the year announcement. “Fan posts say, ‘I’m not parasocial about it,’ and there’s also talk of ‘Swifty being parasocial for 10 minutes straight.'”
In fact, Taylor and Travis’ joint post on Aug. 26 announcing their engagement garnered nearly 40 million likes, setting a record for the fastest post to reach 1 million likes, racking up the total in less than six hours.
