OpenAI and Amazon sign $38 billion cloud computing deal

OpenAI has not yet completed securing the AI infrastructure necessary to quickly scale agent workloads. The ChatGPT maker announced Monday that it has reached an agreement with Amazon to acquire the cloud computing service for $38 billion over the next seven years.

OpenAI said it will start using AWS compute immediately and aims to deploy all capacity by the end of 2026, with further expansion possible in 2027 and beyond.

The partnership follows OpenAI’s reorganization last week, which means the company no longer needs Microsoft’s approval to purchase computing services from other companies.

OpenAI’s deal with Amazon is part of the company’s larger mission to expand its computing power, spending more than $1 trillion over the next 10 years. The company announced the construction of new data centers with Oracle, SoftBank, the United Arab Emirates, and others. OpenAI has also secured deals with chipmakers Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom.

For some analysts, increased investment from OpenAI and other tech giants suggests the industry is headed for an AI bubble, with huge sums of money being spent to power up unproven and potentially dangerous technologies without clear signs of meaningful return on investment.
