“This is the story of NBA insider trading.”
That was FBI Director Kash Patel’s message during Thursday’s press conference announcing the arrests of Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat player Terry Rozier.
Prosecutors said they were among more than 30 people charged in an illegal poker ring involving organized crime and fraud. U.S. prosecutors, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies have also charged Rozier and former Cleveland Cavaliers player and assistant coach Damon Jones with a sports gambling scheme that involved hosting games and placing illegal bets on inside information.
This could be the kind of news that could be damaging, or perhaps a real opportunity, for the legal gambling industry.
Legally licensed sportsbooks in the United States have seen significant growth in recent years, but are still trying to expand. Market leader FanDuel, draft kings, betmgm and caesars Two of the most populous states, California and Texas, have not legalized sports betting, making it inaccessible.
As state legislatures debate whether to legalize sports betting, questions about the integrity of sports and opportunities for cheating linger. Players arrested on federal charges for allegedly manipulating gameplay and profiting from illegal activities provide hard evidence of the dangers of gambling.
The commercial gambling industry knows this. And we are seizing the opportunity to re-emphasize its protection.
“Today’s events are deeply disturbing and should concern fans, athletes, and everyone who loves sports and values integrity and fair play,” FanDuel owns. fluttersaid federal prosecutors and law enforcement in a statement to CNBC shortly after the press conference.
“We remain unwavering in our determination to root out cheating by those who seek to undermine fair competition and the game we love,” FanDuel said.
The American Gaming Association released the following statement in a statement: “Today’s revelations are a stark reminder of the pervasive and predatory illegal market operating in the shadows, entrapping countless individuals…It is important to recognize that a regulated legal market provides transparency, oversight, and cooperation with authorities to help bring these bad actors to light.”
a draft kings “We fundamentally believe that regulating online sports betting is the best way forward to monitor and detect suspicious activity,” a spokesperson told CNBC.
Sportsbooks and the integrity monitoring companies that work with them were involved in alerting authorities to Jontay Porter’s unusually high prop bets, resulting in Porter’s lifetime ban from the NBA and conviction on federal charges last year.
Prosecutors allege Porter’s operations were part of the same syndicate operating from 2022 to 2024 that led to the arrests of six people this week.
Sportsbooks’ quick response with carefully crafted crisis communication messages may be designed to fend off threats from state gaming regulators to crack down on player props, which are often the basis of parlay bets.
Parlays, which combine multiple betting criteria into one bet, are very profitable for sportsbooks and popular with customers, despite the low probability of winning.
It could ultimately be an opportunity for commercial and tribal casinos if negative headlines about illegal gambling prompt further enforcement actions against unlicensed operators.
All told, unlicensed gambling in the United States is estimated to result in $674 billion in wagers annually, the AGA announced in August.
